Tour Highlight: The Great Wildebeest Migration

Wildebeest crossing Mara River

Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest (white-bearded gnu) roam the park moving constantly. In early September, the herds are congregating in the northern Serengeti where the Mara River proves to be the most serious obstacle. Crossings here are the main attraction and happen sometimes in spectacular fashion with thousands of wildebeest crossing at once to overwhelm the crocodile, waiting patiently in the river below. Of course, with the herds come the predators. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs are most common. Many predators depend upon patience and careful stalking. Part of the cunning of the hunting animal is to give the appearance of disinterest and laziness and to remain inconspicuous until it is time to announce its role.

The northern area of the Serengeti is a vast, pristine region of wooded rolling hills interspersed with open grassy patches and large granite outcrops. It is here that we hope to witness the most amazing wildlife spectacle in Africa—the Great Wildebeest Migration crossing the Mara River. This lush, idyllic spot, hidden away in the remote reaches of the north, is home to many varieties of birds, including kingfishers, hoopoes, and rollers. The Mara River also houses a healthy population of Nile crocodiles, some measuring over 15 feet and weighing over 1,500 lbs. During these two days, we’ll embark on game drives in the morning and late afternoon, exploring the Mara River to witness wildebeest crossings and encounter various other wildlife. (B, L, D)

Testimonials

This was one of my finest trips and far exceeded my expectations. The accommodations were first class, and the entire trip was well organized. The Safari guides they chose were highly skilled, knowledgeable, and knew where to find the animals. The hotel personnel were very helpful and friendly. Even the “tent” accommodations in the Serengeti were as fancy as first-class hotels and very safe.
- Jame
Was I dreaming when I found myself showering outdoors beneath the stars with a panoramic view of the Serengeti below, listening to a lion roar as the sun was rising on one end and a full moon glowing on the other? Thank you for a truly amazing African safari experience.
