Dan O'Donnell's Family Adventure – Costa Rica

Over the past two years, the Dan O’Donnell Family Adventure has traveled to New York and Boston—two of my favorite cities in the U.S. Now though, it’s time for our greatest adventure yet:

You’re invited to join us!
Dan O’Donnell’s Family Adventure
Costa Rica
April 11 – 19, 2020

We’ll fly into the capital city of San Jose, then tour the world-famous Arenal Volcano (and if you’re feeling brave, zip line down it), relax in the natural hot springs at our luxury resort, and see jungle wildlife on the breathtaking hanging bridges of Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. And that’s just the first few days! We’ll visit the stunning beaches, mangroves, and inland lagoons of Manuel Antonio National Park and tour the incredible jungle-topped cliff known as Punta Catedral. After that, it’s back to our beachfront resort and casino for dinner and maybe a little gambling. The next day, we’ll take a riverboat cruise through the mangrove forests of the Tarcoles River in Carara National Park—home to one of the largest colonies of crocodiles on the planet.

And while this is an adventure that can be shared with a family, it’s also perfect for couples of any age. But hurry because space is limited and with an adventure this exciting, it will fill up quickly.

Hope to see you in Costa Rica!

San Jose–Arenal Volcano
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll journey to the Arenal Volcano region in La Fortuna, stopping at Poas Volcano National Park and a local restaurant for lunch on the way. Known worldwide for its near-perfect cone shape, Arenal Volcano is a must-see destination in Costa Rica. On the morning of July 29, 1968, the supposed mountain suddenly erupted, continuing non-stop for several days and covering almost 4,000 acres with lava, rocks and ash. It remained active from then on until 2010. Near the base of the volcano sits the 5-star Arenal Springs Resort & Spa. After checking in, the rest of the day is yours to relax in the natural hot springs or pool. (B, L)

Arenal Volcano & Sky Adventures
After breakfast we’ll visit Sky Adventures Arenal Park. Our adventure begins on the Sky Tram, flying among the trees and wildlife inside a comfortable and spacious gondola. At the end of the tram ride you can either go back down the same way or enjoy the ultimate adrenaline rush, the Sky Trek zip line. Enjoy lunch at the park before heading back to our volcanic retreat with the rest of the day at your leisure. (B, L)

Arenal Volcano
Today is yours to enjoy the beauty of our resort as you wish. Tonight, enjoy an authentic dinner with the group at a local restaurant. (B, D)

Arenal Volcano–Jaco
After breakfast we’ll head out for a guided walk through Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, where you can see wildlife in their natural habitat. Manuel Antonio National Park–Jaco
After breakfast, head out for a visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. It’s one of the most popular national parks in the country, despite being the smallest, for its stunning white sand beaches backed by evergreen tropical forests. The park is filled with beach vegetation, lagoons, mangrove swamps, 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. One of the park’s biggest attractions is Punta Catedral, or “Cathedral Point.” This forest-topped cliff was once an island and is now connected to the coast by a narrow strip of land that separates the park’s two most popular beaches. Return to Jaco in the afternoon before a dinner at the hotel. (B, L, D)

Friday, April 17, 2020

Jaco Beach
Enjoy a full day to relax at the beach or pool, hit the Vegas-style casino or take an optional tour. (B, L, D)

Saturday, April 18, 2020

Jaco–Guacalillo–San Jose
Today we’ll depart Jaco and head to the Guacalillo estuary near Carara National Park and board a river boat for a cruise through this amazing ecosystem. The rich mangrove forest of the estuary and the nearby Tarcoles River is home to one of the largest colonies of crocodiles in the world. It’s also a vital conservation area for the colorful scarlet macaw. We’ll cruise along the mangrove until we reach the riverbanks, where you can get a close-up look at wild crocodiles, each up to fifteen feet long. Lunch will be served and then we’ll continue back to San Jose. After checking back in to the Wyndham San Jose Herradura, enjoy a delicious farewell dinner with the group. (B, L, D)
