A Christmas Market Wonderland Along the Danube

Nestled in charming cities, cobblestone streets are illuminated by holiday lights, set against stunning historic backdrops, with extravagant decor at each turn. Europe is a true Christmas Wonderland, and what better way to experience the magic than in good company?

Mandy Connell of KOA Denver and Brett Winterble of WBT Charlotte have teamed up with Folds of Honor to offer you a one-of-a-kind Christmas experience. By day, you’ll be dazzled by some of Europe’s biggest and best Christmas markets. Your evenings will be merry and bright as you sip Christmas cocktails over a gourmet meal with fellow like-minded cruisers.

Christmas markets, also known as Christkindlesmarkt (Christ Child Market), are a paradise for those who adore the Christmas season. The markets date back to the Middle Ages in Germany during the Reformation era throughout Advent, starting in 1434. Today, there are hundreds of markets throughout Central Europe! Among the famed cozy wooden chalets, find a magical wonderland of Christmas treats such as toasted almonds (Gebrannte Mandeln), Gluhwein (hot mulled wine), and aromatic gingerbread, among others! Keep an eye open for ornaments, nutcrackers, beautiful handicrafts, and enchanting festive vibes!

Folds of Honor

Meeting sacrifice with hope since 2007.

It began with Lt Col Dan Rooney’s flight home from his second tour of duty in Iraq. An F-16 fighter pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, he became painfully aware of the realities families face when a loved one in uniform has fallen or becomes disabled.

As his flight landed, the pilot announced they carried the remains of Corporal Brock Bucklin on board. Lt Col Rooney watched as Corporal Bucklin’s twin brother walked somberly alongside the flag-covered casket to meet his family on the tarmac. Among them was the deceased Corporal’s young son, Jacob.

Since that night, Lt Col Rooney has committed his life to rallying patriotic Americans and meeting sacrifice with hope through the Folds of Honor. Since 2007, we’ve provided life-changing scholarships to the spouses and children of America’s fallen or disabled military. And now, our mission expands to the families of America’s first responders. On our watch, those who protect our freedoms, and our families will know they are not forgotten.

Linz, Austria, Cruising the Danube River
There is more to Linz than its famous Linzer torte, although that alone makes it well worth a visit. The city boasts a thriving contemporary art scene, and its two Christmas markets are over-the-top enchanting. In keeping with the Austrian traditions of good food and good music, Linz gave rise to both the Linzer torte and the Linz Symphony. The symphony is one of Mozart’s most celebrated works. Today, the choice is yours! After strolling through the Old Town, you can take a ride into the countryside to discover a cider farm (the region’s most popular drink) or spend more time exploring Linz’s tantalizing Christmas markets. Ride up to the mine by cable car, get your helmet, and dive deep into the mountain. (B, L, D)

A glorious Baroque palace enfolds the square, where branch-thatched huts sell handcrafted local wares and Bavarian delicacies.

The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish. Christmas markets are set up in the area where artisans and craftspeople sell handmade dolls, marionettes, pottery, and other fine-quality wares. Shop for children’s toys or traditional Nativity scenes with hand-carved figures. As you take in the delights of the markets, enjoy regional specialties, such as mulled blueberry wine from the Bavarian Forest, Regensburg sausages on crisp rolls, steamed dampfnudel (dumplings with vanilla sauce), and mulled cider.
