There is so much of this city to discover and it’s waiting just for you! As your room at the hotel won’t be available until late afternoon, we’ll take you to the heart of the city for independent exploration prior to checking in. Your adventure begins with a horse-drawn carriage ride exploring Charleston’s historic downtown district and learning everything the city, often referred to as the “Holy City,” has to offer. Then, savor the flavors as we walk, talk and taste our way through Charleston and discover its unique cuisine. Along the way, you’ll discover the regional flavor that is part of the fabric of this port city and sample delicious specialties from local eateries, markets, bakeries, restaurants and culinary landmarks. Beaufort, SC–Savannah, Georgia
Your day begins with a visit to Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens. Enter along the world-famous Avenue of Oaks and discover one of America’s oldest plantations, including a guided tour of the first floor and the Black History in America exhibit, presenting the history of slavery during plantation life. Travel down the coast through South Carolina’s Low Country, stopping en route at the lovely little harbor town of Beaufort, located on Port Royal Island. Here you’ll find a downtown designated as a historic district, with horse and buggy rides, antebellum architecture and some of the South’s most unique restaurants. You’ll spend a bit of independent time in the historic district and grab lunch (on own) before continuing your journey to Savannah. (B)
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is waiting! Climb aboard and step into Savannah’s fascinating history on a trolley tour of the city’s cobblestone streets and elegant neighborhoods. Your historic conductor will share scenes from life in the historic South, divulge stories and secrets, and point out the landmarks and mansions you pass along the way. We’ve included a hop-on-hop-off, unlimited re-boarding trolley ticket, affording an afternoon to explore as you please. Tonight, join the group at a local waterfront restaurant, dwelling in an 18th-century restored cotton warehouse, for your farewell dinner. If you’ve never had or heard of shrimp and grits, you’re in for a treat. Watch and learn as the chef demonstrates how to make this delicious southern favorite. There’s plenty of recipes out there, but there is something about this recipe that stands out above the rest. (B, D)
